Engage and Evangelize: Church Planting for the Digital Age
By Richard K. Marshall · Originally published
The Great Commission doesn't require a steeple. It requires a signal.
Screens are replacing stained glass. The traditional model of church planting, especially in the Baptist tradition, can look like a relic.
But what if we're not watching church planting die? What if the Holy Spirit is giving it new life online?
The digital frontier is holy ground
Paul went to synagogues and marketplaces to spread the Gospel. Today's digital platforms are our Areopagus.
Billions of people gather there. That's an unprecedented chance to sow seeds of faith. Are we using it?
From pew to pixel
The church isn't the building. It's the body of believers.
Jesus didn't say, "Go and build churches." He said, "Go and make disciples of all nations."
Online communities aren't just a substitute. They're new vineyards to work in for the Lord. Discipleship can happen in real time, across continents, through a shared screen instead of a shared room.
A call to digital discipleship
Digital-first church communities don't abandon tradition. They adapt it to fulfill God's command in Matthew 28:19-20.
Imagine YouTube for testimonies, Instagram for daily encouragement and Zoom for prayer meetings, reaching people who might never walk into a church building.
Engagement over overhead
Without the cost of physical buildings, resources can go straight to missions, community service and global outreach. That's the love and generosity Christ taught.
Expanding the church, not replacing it
This isn't about replacing the church. It's about extending its reach.
Online, we can build real connections, teach the Bible and create spaces for worship that speak to people who grew up digital. The church becomes a living body beyond walls, open around the clock, the way our faith should be.
Your part
If you want the Gospel to reach every corner of the earth, ask yourself:
- How could you contribute to, or start, a digital ministry?
- How could your tech skills serve the Kingdom?
Let's not mourn the old ways. Let's celebrate how God may be moving us into a new era of evangelism and community.
Pray for wisdom to navigate this landscape, for hearts open to new kinds of fellowship, and for courage to pioneer this mission field. That's how we become "all things to all people" (1 Corinthians 9:22) for the glory of God.
One thing you can do today: start a digital Bible study with two or three people.
