Life: The Ultimate Production
By Richard K. Marshall · Originally published
Your life is a production. You're the star and the director.
Here's how to script, capture and produce your days.
1. Write the daily script
Start each day with a plan. Not minute by minute. Sketch the acts.
What are the key scenes? Who are the characters you'll deal with? What plot twist are you aiming for?
Use an app or a paper journal, but make it real.
2. Set the scene
Your environment is your stage. Make capturing life's moments as easy as pressing a button: wearable tech, a camera that's always ready, voice notes.
3. Treat it like a live feed
You're both the star and the director. This isn't about performing. It's about paying attention. Every moment could be a clip in your life's documentary.
4. Edit
Not every second is gold. That's what editing is for.
Once a week, review your "dailies": your footage and your notes. Decide what to keep, what to archive and what to cut. That's where you shape your story.
5. Clean up the set
Like any good studio, keep your physical and digital space clean. Clutter kills creativity and productivity. A clean space reflects a clear mind.
6. Choose authenticity over perfection
7. Know when to go off-screen
Decide what's for the public and what stays off camera.
8. Mind the mental game
Being in production mode all the time is draining. Write time into the script for just being, not capturing or performing.
Your story
Treat your life like a production and you're not just living. You're shaping a story. You control the pace and the highlights.
Make it a story worth telling, with all the drama, comedy and adventure life throws at you.
And remember: every great director knows when to call "cut" and enjoy the moment for what it is.
