Metanoia, Day 3: Listening in Prayer

Part 3 of a ten-day journey. The full series is also available as one combined guide.
Prayer isn't just asking. It's listening.
We tend to rush into prayer with a list of requests. But prayer is a two-way street.
Psalm 46:10: "Be still, and know that I am God."
That's not a suggestion. It's an invitation to quiet our hearts and listen for His voice.
The art of listening
Think about how it feels when someone really listens to you. That's what we're after in prayer.
Make a space of silence where you can hear God's gentle whisper. It may feel awkward at first. That's where the real conversation begins.
How to build silence
- Set aside time. Sit in silence before God every day, even for five minutes.
- Focus. Use a verse or a simple prayer word. When your mind wanders, gently bring it back.
- Expect guidance. Believe God speaks, through thoughts, Scripture or impressions on your heart.
Why listen
- Wisdom. Proverbs 2:6: "For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding."
- Direction. God can tailor His guidance to your particular journey.
- Peace. Listening to God calms the storms and brings a peace beyond understanding.
Today's challenge
Spend part of your prayer time in silence. Ask God to speak, then just listen.
Notice what thoughts or feelings come up, and write them down. Over time, you'll start to recognize His voice.
Talk about it with other believers, too. Sharing what you've "heard" can encourage them, and it helps you test whether what you're sensing lines up with God's Word.
Silence is where you hear God's whispers.
