The Simple Path to Wisdom
By Richard K. Marshall · Originally published
Every day, you pick a path. Wisdom or folly.
It sounds as old as the hills. It's as fresh as this morning.
Simple, not simplistic
The world often mistakes complexity for depth. Christianity calls us back to simplicity.
Not the thoughtless kind. The kind that cuts through the noise like a bell.
Life gives us two paths. One is lined with wisdom and righteousness. The other is lined with folly and, let's just say, not the best choices.
Proverbs 4:26-27 (NIV): "Give careful thought to the paths for your feet and be steadfast in all your ways. Do not turn to the right or the left; keep your foot from evil."
That isn't just ancient advice. It's a strategy for life, for every Christian, whatever the denomination.
Why choose wisdom
Wisdom leads to life. Proverbs 9:11 (NIV): "For through wisdom your days will be many, and years will be added to your life." Who doesn't want that? But it's about quality as much as length. A wise life is a full life.
Righteousness protects. It doesn't mean trouble won't knock. It means you'll be equipped when it does. Psalm 23 reminds us that even in the valley of the shadow of death, we fear no evil, because righteousness lines us up with the ultimate protector.
Folly is a trap. The path of folly can look fun. It's the party everybody seems to be at. But Proverbs 14:12 (NIV) warns: "There is a way that appears to be right, but in the end it leads to death." It's picking the shiny poisoned apple over a humble loaf of bread.
Choose it every day
Wisdom isn't a one-time altar call. It's a daily commitment.
- Morning prayer. Start the day lined up with God. A simple "Lead me in your righteousness today" sets the tone.
- A verse instead of a scroll. Swap a few minutes of doom-scrolling for a verse or two.
- Good company. Surround yourself with other people who are seeking wisdom.
- Evening reflection. Where did you choose wisdom today? Where did folly sneak in? Learn and adjust.
The joy of simple
The beauty of the Christian life is its focus. Love God. Love others. Walk in wisdom. Live righteously.
It's not about being perfect. It's about being purposeful.
So choose wisdom. Not because it's easy, but because it leads to real life. Every wise step adds to a legacy of righteousness, in your life and beyond it.
Start tonight: before bed, ask where you chose wisdom today.
